Abstract

The Hungarian Basketball Association has strengthened the system of traditional association youth development system with an accredited academy network, which system is complemented by state-recognized academies also. The survey, which asked all the direct stakeholders of the youth development system, analyzed the comments related to the talent management process and the factors affecting success. Among the success factors, the coaches consider the players’ positive character traits to be the most important, followed by the coach’s motivation, methodological knowledge, and professional knowledge. Among the influencing factors, the coaches rated the role of managers the lowest. According to the coach’s answers, becoming a successful coach is mostly determined by the coach’s pedagogical and psychological knowledge. Although the coaches attach special importance to pedagogical and psychological knowledge, the qualifications do not substantiate this opinion.

Review

The paper, "Tehetséggondozás a kosárlabdában" (Talent Management in Basketball), addresses a highly relevant and timely topic within sports development: the optimization of youth talent identification and nurturing systems. Focusing on the Hungarian context, the study investigates the efficacy and perceptions surrounding the newly strengthened academy network established by the Hungarian Basketball Association. By surveying direct stakeholders, the research aims to illuminate the factors influencing successful talent management processes, providing valuable insights into the operational aspects of modern sports academies. The abstract highlights several critical findings derived from the stakeholder survey, particularly emphasizing coaches' perspectives. Coaches predominantly identify players' positive character traits as the most crucial success factor, followed by their own motivation, methodological expertise, and professional knowledge. Interestingly, the role of managers was rated lowest by coaches, suggesting potential areas for improved communication or structural integration. A significant insight is the coaches' belief that pedagogical and psychological knowledge are paramount for becoming a successful coach, a perception that the authors note is not consistently supported by existing qualifications. This discrepancy represents a key tension that warrants further exploration. A clear strength of this study lies in its direct engagement with stakeholders within the accredited academy network, providing an authentic perspective on the challenges and priorities within youth basketball development. The identification of key success factors and the perceived importance of pedagogical/psychological skills for coaches are valuable contributions that could inform future coach education programs. However, while the abstract states "all direct stakeholders" were surveyed, the presented findings are heavily skewed towards coach perspectives. Future iterations or the full paper could benefit from elaborating on the diverse viewpoints of other stakeholder groups (e.g., players, parents, managers) to provide a more holistic view. Furthermore, a deeper analysis into *why* the gap exists between the perceived importance of pedagogical/psychological knowledge and actual qualifications would be beneficial, potentially leading to actionable recommendations for policy changes within the Hungarian Basketball Association's academy structure.
