Abstract

This study aims to critically examine the criteria of tsiqah (trustworthy) narrators from the perspective of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, a leading scholar in the field of hadith science. In his book, Taqrīb al-Tahżīb, Ibn Hajar developed a very influential system of evaluating narrators, covering aspects of fairness (adālah) and accuracy (ḍabṭ}. This study focuses on an in-depth analysis of these criteria, including their assessment methods and applications in determining the status of hadith. The methodology used will focus on a qualitative approach, with a library research method. The results show that Ibn Hajar's assessment has some differences with other scholars, such as Ibn Hibban and ibn Abi Hatim. Ibn Hibban is known to be too lenient so that he gets criticized by scholars. Because he often assesses majhūl narrators as ṡiqah narrators, as he often states in his book al-ṡiqāt. This research is expected to be involved in adding new treasures in the treasury of hadith science studies. And it can also strengthen the methodology of hadith science, especially in understanding the principles of tauṡīq and jarḥ which are more moderate and systematic.
