Abstract

Review

This paper addresses a highly relevant topic within geotechnical engineering, particularly for regions like Indonesia where CPT (Cone Penetration Test) and SPT (Standard Penetration Test) are standard practice for foundation design. The study, titled "Studi Korelasi Nilai Sondir Terhadap Data Nilai SPT Pada Pekerjaan Soil Investigation Pembangunan RSUD Kabupaten Mimika Papua Tengah," aims to establish a correlation between CPT and SPT values from soil investigation data collected for the construction of a hospital in Mimika Regency, Central Papua. Such research is crucial for enhancing the reliability of site characterization and optimizing foundation design in local geological conditions, thereby contributing directly to practical engineering applications. The abstract outlines the fundamental objectives of both CPT, focusing on cone resistance (qc) and friction sleeve resistance for bearing capacity estimation, and SPT, aiming to determine N-values for relative density and visual soil classification. The preliminary findings presented include a CPT cone resistance of 320 qc at a depth of 5.3 meters, and an SPT N-value of 34 at 6 meters. The authors note a transition from sandy clay to gravelly sand between 5 and 6 meters, which reportedly limited the CPT penetration to 5 meters. The core conclusion drawn is that an N-SPT value of 34 at 6 meters indicates hard soil, which is deemed "consistent with" (sebanding dengan) a CPT value above 250 qc. While this observation provides an initial insight, the abstract presents a very limited dataset for a meaningful correlation, and the slight depth discrepancy between the CPT and SPT readings for comparison (5.3m vs 6m) requires careful consideration in the full manuscript. To strengthen the study, it is highly recommended that the full paper present a more comprehensive dataset, detailing correlations across various soil layers and depths, rather than relying on a single comparative point. A more rigorous statistical analysis demonstrating the relationship between qc and N-values would be beneficial, moving beyond qualitative statements of consistency. Furthermore, the empirical formulas used for interpreting CPT data should be explicitly stated, and a clear discussion on the geological context and its influence on the soil parameters would enhance the paper's scientific rigor. Addressing these points would significantly improve the robustness and generalizability of the proposed correlation, making it a more valuable resource for geotechnical practitioners in the region.
