Abstract

Speech delay in early childhood can affect a child's social, emotional, and academic development. Early intervention is essential to prevent long-term impacts. One of the methods that can be used is play therapy using flashcard media. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of flashcard-based play therapy in improving speech ability in children with speech delay. The research used a case study approach involving two children with speech delay at UPTD Puskesmas Menteng Palangka Raya. The intervention was conducted over five sessions of flashcard play therapy within one month, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results showed improvements in speech ability, vocabulary, the ability to point to and name pictures, as well as increased eye contact and verbal responses in both patients. However, for the first patient, the improvement could not be fully attributed to flashcard therapy, as the child also received other therapies at the hospital, the methods of which were not clearly documented. Flashcard therapy proved to be an effective stimulus to enhance speech ability in children with speech delay.

Review

This case study addresses a highly relevant issue: speech delay in early childhood and the potential for early intervention using play therapy with flashcards. The study clearly outlines its objective to determine the effectiveness of flashcard-based play therapy in improving speech ability in children with speech delay, a critical area for developmental support. The observed improvements in speech ability, vocabulary, the capacity to point to and name pictures, along with increased eye contact and verbal responses in both participants, suggest a promising preliminary indication that this therapeutic approach can serve as a beneficial stimulus for language development. The use of a practical, accessible method like flashcards is an attractive aspect for clinicians and parents alike. However, the study's methodology presents several significant limitations that temper the interpretability of its findings. As a case study involving only two children, the generalizability of the results is severely restricted. More critically, the abstract explicitly states that for the first patient, improvements "could not be fully attributed to flashcard therapy" due to concurrent, undocumented therapies received at the hospital. This introduces a substantial confounding variable, making it impossible to isolate the specific impact of the flashcard intervention for one of the two subjects. The reliance on observation, interviews, and documentation without clear, standardized pre- and post-intervention assessment tools also limits the objectivity and robust quantification of the reported improvements. Despite these limitations, the study offers valuable initial insights into the potential of flashcard play therapy for children with speech delay. Future research would significantly benefit from a more rigorous experimental design, including a larger sample size, a control group, and the use of standardized, objective assessment instruments to measure speech development. It is also crucial to meticulously control for confounding variables, such as other therapies, to accurately determine the specific efficacy of flashcard intervention. Expanding the intervention period and including long-term follow-up would also provide a more comprehensive understanding of sustained benefits. This initial exploration, while constrained, effectively highlights an area ripe for further, more robust investigation.
