The disparity in access to education is still very evident, especially for communities in densely populated areas such as Medan Amplas, Medan City. This educational disparity is a significant challenge for the government in developing human resources. Children from marginalized communities do not have access to good and adequate education, both in terms of quality and opportunity. Rumah Pintar YAFSI, an initiative of the Fajar Sejahtera Indonesia Foundation (YAFSI), is a community-based social innovation. It provides alternative learning spaces outside of school for marginalized children. YAFSI Smart House employs a community organizing and community development approach to engage the community. It uses the Appreciative Community Mobilization (ACM) method, focusing on cognitive, character development, and community empowerment. This study identifies and describes the role of social workers at the Rumah Pintar YAFSI in North Sumatra. A qualitative approach with a descriptive method was used to understand the intake process and the role of social workers. The study results indicate that social workers carry out their role as peer educators effectively and systematically. In handling clients, social workers also collaborate with various stakeholders. These findings definitively show that social innovations like Rumah Pintar, which take a humanistic approach and involve community elements, can effectively address educational inequality in urban area and contribute positively to social workers who serve as peer educators.
This paper presents a timely and highly relevant study on Rumah Pintar YAFSI as a social innovation aimed at addressing educational inequality in densely populated urban areas, specifically Medan Amplas, Medan City. The abstract effectively highlights the pervasive challenge of marginalized children lacking access to quality education and introduces Rumah Pintar YAFSI as a community-based alternative learning space. Its commitment to a holistic approach, encompassing cognitive development, character building, and community empowerment through methods like Appreciative Community Mobilization, demonstrates a thoughtful and integrated strategy. The study's clear objective of describing the role of social workers within this initiative and its finding that they function effectively as peer educators, systematically and collaboratively, underscores the practical contributions of this program. The strengths of this research lie in its focus on a critical social issue and the innovative, community-centric solution it investigates. By detailing the role of social workers as peer educators within Rumah Pintar YAFSI, the study provides valuable insights into how such initiatives can be effectively implemented and managed. The emphasis on a humanistic approach and active community involvement suggests a sustainable model for intervention, moving beyond mere academic descriptions to demonstrate a tangible path for positive social change. Furthermore, the findings contribute significantly to the understanding of social work practice in community development settings, highlighting a specific, impactful role for professionals in fostering educational opportunities for vulnerable populations. While the abstract provides a compelling overview, further details on the qualitative methodology would enhance the study's rigor. Specifically, elaborating on the data collection methods (e.g., in-depth interviews, participant observation, focus groups), the selection criteria for participants (social workers, community members, children), and the analytical framework used to interpret the descriptive data would strengthen the findings. Although the paper asserts the effectiveness of Rumah Pintar's humanistic approach, the abstract could benefit from a clearer indication of how this effectiveness was *measured* or *demonstrated* beyond the functional description of social worker roles. Future research could explore the long-term educational and social outcomes for the children benefiting from Rumah Pintar YAFSI, assess the scalability of this model to other regions, or investigate the specific challenges encountered and overcome during its implementation.
