Abstract

Review

This study investigates the production risk associated with semi-organic and inorganic rice farming systems in Papar District, Kediri Regency, a region noted for its adoption of both practices. The abstract highlights an observed positive impact of organic matter on productivity, yet acknowledges the slow uptake of semi-organic methods by local farmers. To address this disparity, the research employs a production risk analysis, aiming to quantify the differences in productivity variation between the two systems. This timely topic is crucial for understanding the barriers to sustainable agricultural transitions and providing empirical insights for farmers and policymakers. The core findings indicate that semi-organic rice farming exhibits a greater range and higher variability in productivity, as evidenced by larger variance and standard deviation values compared to inorganic methods. This suggests a potentially higher inherent production risk for semi-organic practices. However, a significant concluding point is that despite this greater variability, the coefficient of variation (CV) for both semi-organic and inorganic systems was found to be below a predetermined risk threshold. This implies that, based on this specific metric, farmers employing either system are deemed to be effectively shielded from substantial production risk. The abstract successfully identifies a key dilemma and attempts to quantify an aspect of it, providing a quantitative basis for discussion. While the study provides valuable insights into production risk, the abstract would benefit from further elaboration on the methodology, particularly regarding the determination of the "risk threshold" for the coefficient of variation – its basis and implications for interpretation. Future research could expand upon this by integrating other dimensions of risk, such as market risk (price volatility) and financial risk (input costs, profit margins), which are often critical in farmers' decision-making processes. Furthermore, a deeper exploration into the socio-economic factors and perceptions influencing farmers' reluctance to transition, beyond just perceived production risk, would strengthen the applicability of the findings for developing targeted extension services and policy interventions aimed at promoting more sustainable agricultural practices.
