Abstract

(PROTO)SURNAMES OF POLISH ARMENIANS BASED ON ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH REGISTERS FROM SOUTHEASTERN BORDERLANDS (17TH-19TH CENTURIES): SELECTED ISSUESThe article is based on excerpts from Roman Catholic parish registers in Brzeżany, Kołomyja, Obertyn, and Żółkiew, serving as a significant source for anthroponymic studies of Polish Armenians. Criteria for including the collected anthroponyms in the study were defined: besides undisputed cases where the ethnicity of a person was indicated in the entry, other criteria of being Armenian were also taken into account – confessional (notes about the Armenian rite) and anthroponymic (the form of the name or surname used by Armenians). The dictionary includes 69 (proto)surnames covered in 63 entries.

Review

The article "(Proto)Surnames of Polish Armenians Based on Roman Catholic Parish Registers from Southeastern Borderlands (17th-19th Centuries): Selected Issues)" presents a highly focused and valuable contribution to anthroponymic and historical research. Its primary aim, to document and analyze the (proto)surnames of Polish Armenians, is significant given the often-complex linguistic and cultural assimilation processes of this diaspora community in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and subsequent periods. By meticulously drawing upon primary sources – Roman Catholic parish registers from the Southeastern Borderlands – the study offers a unique lens into the onomastic heritage of a distinct ethnic and confessional group over a substantial historical span (17th-19th centuries), addressing a niche yet crucial area of sociolinguistic history. The methodological approach outlined in the abstract demonstrates a rigorous and thoughtful design. The selection of specific parish registers from Brzeżany, Kołomyja, Obertyn, and Żółkiew provides a solid documentary foundation for the analysis. Crucially, the authors have defined clear and multifaceted criteria for identifying Armenian anthroponyms, moving beyond explicit ethnic markers to include confessional indicators (notes about the Armenian rite) and anthroponymic patterns (the specific form of names or surnames used by Armenians). This systematic approach to data collection and verification enhances the reliability and validity of the findings, culminating in a dictionary of 69 (proto)surnames across 63 entries, which represents a substantial empirical contribution to the field. This study promises to be an indispensable resource for scholars working on historical onomastics, the history of Polish Armenians, and broader cultural and social histories of the Kresy region. Its detailed analysis of surname forms will undoubtedly illuminate aspects of linguistic evolution, cultural integration, and the preservation of ethnic identity within a minority community over centuries. By providing a structured dictionary of these (proto)surnames, the article offers a foundational dataset for future comparative studies and deeper explorations into the socio-linguistic dynamics of Polish Armenians. The robust methodology and the specific, empirical output ensure its strong recommendation as a valuable addition to the literature.
