Abstract

Many folklore from various regions show similarities, especially in the story's motif, as seen in the folklore of the Tiban Tradition in Kediri Residency, which is related to culture and beliefs. This research aims to identify the motifs in the folklore of the Tiban tradition in Kediri Residency, precisely in Purwokerto Village, Kediri Regency and Wajak Village, Tulungagung Regency. This study uses qualitative methods and Stith Thompson's motive theory to analyze the motives in the story. A comparative literary approach is used to compare the two stories. The data collection and data analysis methods used an ethnographic approach. By comparing motifs in Tiban traditional folklore in Purwokerto Village and Wajak Village, this study found 23 data and 11 types of motifs. The results of the study found that there are six-story motifs in Purwokerto Village, namely marvels motifs, magic motifs, traits of character motifs, mythological motifs, sacrifices motifs, and symbolic motifs. In Wajak Village, there are five motifs, namely the test motif, the sacrifice motif, the traits of character, the symbolic symbolism, and the marvels motif. Therefore, four similar motifs and three different motifs were found.

Review

This paper, "Perbandingan Motif Cerita Rakyat Asal-usul Tradisi Tiban di Karesidenan Kediri," presents an interesting comparative analysis of folklore motifs. The research aims to identify and compare motifs within the origin stories of the Tiban Tradition across two specific locations in the Kediri Residency: Purwokerto Village and Wajak Village. The study's focus on cultural and belief-related folklore, employing established theoretical frameworks, suggests a valuable contribution to understanding regional narrative commonalities and divergences. The abstract clearly outlines the research objective and the comparative nature of the investigation. A key strength of this work lies in its robust methodological approach. The use of qualitative methods, specifically grounded in Stith Thompson's motif theory for analysis and a comparative literary approach for the inter-story comparison, provides a solid academic foundation. Furthermore, the abstract notes the application of an ethnographic approach for data collection and analysis, indicating a rich, context-aware investigation. The research effectively identifies a significant amount of data (23 points) yielding 11 distinct types of motifs across the two narratives. The detailed enumeration of specific motifs found in each village (e.g., marvels, magic, sacrifice) and the subsequent identification of four similar and three different motifs demonstrate a thorough and systematic analytical process. While the abstract effectively presents the findings, it could benefit from briefly touching upon the broader implications of these similarities and differences. For instance, what do these shared motifs suggest about the cultural interconnectedness or shared human experiences within the Kediri Residency? Conversely, what do the divergent motifs imply about local adaptations, unique community values, or historical influences? Expanding on the *significance* of these findings beyond just their enumeration would enhance the abstract's impact and set a strong precedent for the discussion section of the full paper. This study, with its clear methodology and findings, lays excellent groundwork for further exploration into the socio-cultural meanings embedded within these traditional narratives.
