Character education is an integral part of the pesantren education system, emphasizing the development of students’ morals, ethics, and personal integrity. Ta'līm al-Muta'allim, as one of the classical texts studied in pesantren, teaches essential values such as sincerity in seeking knowledge, respect for teachers, diligence in learning, and proper manners in daily life. This study aims to examine the role of Ta'līm al-Muta'allim instruction in shaping the character of students at Pondok Pesantren Darul Ulum Sugio. A qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach was employed. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with the caregivers, teachers, and students, and documentation of the learning process. The data were analyzed inductively by referring to theories of character education and traditional Islamic learning. The findings reveal that the teaching of Ta'līm al-Muta'allim significantly contributes to character formation. The values presented in the book are not only delivered theoretically but also implemented in daily s tudent life through habitual practice and the exemplary conduct of the teachers. The emergence of character traits such as discipline, humility, respect for teachers, and strong learning motivation indicates the success of internalizing these values. Thus, Ta'līm al-Muta'allim serves as an essential medium for the sustainable and contextual internalization of character values in pesantren education.
This study presents a compelling examination of the role of *Ta'līm al-Muta'allim* instruction in character formation among students at Pondok Pesantren Darul Ulum Sugio. By focusing on the integral role of character education within the pesantren system, the paper highlights the enduring relevance of classical Islamic texts in contemporary moral and ethical development. The chosen topic is highly pertinent, addressing the critical need for comprehensive character building, and the abstract clearly articulates the study's aim to demonstrate how traditional pedagogical practices contribute to cultivating essential values such as sincerity, respect, diligence, and proper manners. The methodology employed, a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach, appears well-suited to the research question. The strength of the study lies in its comprehensive data collection strategies, involving observation, in-depth interviews with diverse stakeholders (caregivers, teachers, and students), and documentation of the learning process. This multi-faceted approach allows for a rich and nuanced understanding of how values from *Ta'līm al-Muta'allim* are not only taught theoretically but also internalized and manifested through habitual practice and the exemplary conduct of teachers. The findings, indicating the emergence of specific character traits like discipline, humility, respect, and strong learning motivation, strongly support the assertion that this classical text serves as a vital medium for sustainable character development within the pesantren context. While the abstract provides a strong overview of the study's contributions, future iterations or the full paper could potentially elaborate on the specific mechanisms of "habitual practice" and "exemplary conduct" in fostering character traits, offering more granular details or illustrative examples. Furthermore, as a case study, the findings are deeply contextualized within PP. Darul Ulum Sugio; the abstract could briefly acknowledge this inherent limitation and perhaps suggest avenues for comparative studies across different pesantren settings to explore variations or commonalities in the internalization process. Nevertheless, this research makes a valuable contribution by reaffirming the efficacy of traditional Islamic learning in character education and offers significant insights for educators and policymakers interested in holistic student development.
