The paper "PENGOLAHAN KUALITAS AIR SUNGAI UNTUK MEMENUHI KOMSUMSI AIR BESIH MASYARAKAT DESA MANUMUTIN SILOLE, KABUPATEN MALAKA" addresses a critical public health issue: ensuring access to clean drinking water for rural communities. It focuses on Desa Manumutin Silole, a village entirely dependent on river water due to the absence of other potable sources, highlighting a common challenge in many developing regions. The research is highly relevant, proposing a localized and accessible solution to improve water quality. The primary objectives were to characterize the existing river water quality based on essential parameters and to evaluate the efficacy of a simple, locally constructible water filter in enhancing water quality for safe consumption. Utilizing an experimental design combined with quantitative descriptive methods, the study meticulously crafted a rudimentary filtration system comprising layers of gravel, sand, palm fiber (ijuk), and membrane filter paper. Two samples were critically compared: untreated river water and filtered water. The findings demonstrate significant improvements in several key parameters. Notably, the filter achieved a 100% reduction in E.coli, a crucial indicator of microbial safety, and a substantial 93.80% reduction in turbidity, making the water visually cleaner. Improvements were also observed in color (33.33% reduction), and both samples were free from discernible taste and odor. However, a critical finding was the observed 11.76% *increase* in water hardness after filtration, moving from 420 mg/L to 476 mg/L, which warrants further investigation as it can pose health and practical challenges. While the abstract concludes that the simple filter is "not yet fully effective but meets applicable requirements," the detailed results paint a more nuanced picture. The significant success in removing E.coli and turbidity positions this simple filter as a highly promising immediate intervention for improving the microbial and aesthetic quality of drinking water in Manumutin Silole. However, the unexpected increase in hardness presents a clear limitation and suggests that while some safety requirements might be met, comprehensive water quality may not yet be achieved. Future research should focus on optimizing the filter design to address hardness, perhaps by incorporating additional layers or materials known for ion exchange properties. Further studies should also consider the long-term sustainability, maintenance, and community acceptance of such a filter. Despite this limitation, the study offers valuable insights into practical, low-cost water treatment solutions for remote communities facing severe water scarcity, providing a foundational step towards improving public health.
