This paper addresses a crucial issue concerning sustainable waste management in cattle farming, specifically focusing on the knowledge levels of farmers in Nongkosawit Village, Semarang City. The study underscores the significance of effective waste management not only in mitigating environmental degradation but also in transforming waste into economic value for livestock businesses. By investigating farmer knowledge in this specific context, the research contributes to understanding local capacities and challenges in promoting more sustainable agricultural practices within the livestock sector. Employing a descriptive quantitative method with a total sampling of 45 farmers, the study provides a clear snapshot of the current situation. The findings reveal a high level of knowledge among farmers regarding livestock waste management, with categories reaching 75% and 78% in the Sidomulyo and Pangudi Mulyo farmer groups, respectively. Interestingly, despite this high knowledge, the actual implementation of sustainable waste management practices remains limited. The research further notes that while most farmers do incorporate 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in their waste handling, the marketing of processed waste products, primarily in the form of fertilizer sold to local farmers, is still underdeveloped and carried out by only a segment of the farming community. The paper effectively identifies a significant gap between knowledge and practice, which is a common challenge in agricultural sustainability initiatives. This finding is particularly valuable as it suggests that interventions may need to move beyond mere knowledge dissemination to address other potential barriers to adoption, such as economic constraints, access to technology, or market linkages. Future research could delve deeper into the reasons behind this limited application despite high knowledge, perhaps through qualitative methods. Furthermore, exploring strategies to enhance the economic value chain for processed waste products and expand their market reach could provide practical pathways for improving sustainable waste management in similar contexts. The study offers a foundational understanding that can inform targeted extension programs and policy development aimed at fostering genuinely sustainable cattle farming practices.
