Abstract

World Health Organization (WHO) memiliki tujuan untuk mengurangi komponen kehilangan gigi akibat karies.

Review

This paper investigates the critical issue of dental caries among Indonesian children, a significant public health concern evidenced by high prevalence rates. The study's primary objective was to evaluate the impact of dental conservation education on children's Performance Treatment Index (PTI), a measure of motivation for tooth restoration. The findings suggest a significant positive influence, indicating that such educational interventions can effectively enhance children's PTI. This research addresses a relevant and timely topic, offering valuable insights into promoting better oral health behaviors in pediatric populations. A key strength of this study lies in its direct engagement with a pressing public health issue – the high burden of dental caries in school-aged children and the importance of preventive and restorative care. By focusing on the Performance Treatment Index (PTI), the authors provide a specific and quantifiable measure of motivation for dental treatment, which is a crucial determinant of oral health outcomes. The clear objective and the straightforward approach of implementing an educational intervention make the study's findings readily interpretable. The demonstration of a statistically significant increase in PTI following education underscores the potential effectiveness of structured conservation education programs in improving children's engagement with dental care. While the study presents compelling evidence of a positive association, a primary methodological limitation stems from its quasi-experimental, one-group pre and posttest design. The absence of a control group makes it challenging to definitively attribute the observed increase in PTI solely to the educational intervention, as other confounding factors or maturation effects cannot be entirely ruled out. Future research could strengthen these findings by employing a randomized controlled trial design to provide more robust evidence of causality. Additionally, exploring the long-term sustainability of the PTI improvement and investigating the specific components of the education program that were most effective would provide further valuable insights for policy and practice.
