Abstract

This study aims to examine political issue diversion (breakdown zones) as a form of virtual vandalism that contributes to social turbulence and declining public trust in government from the perspective of Qur'anic exegesis. Political issue diversion through digital media not only shapes public opinion but also creates hyperreality, blurring the distinction between factual information and constructed narratives, thereby shifting public attention away from strategic governmental issues toward viral but less substantial topics. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using library research. Data were collected from Qur'anic verses, classical Qur'anic commentaries, literature on communication studies, political philosophy, media theory, and scholarly publications concerning propaganda, political power, and digital media. Data analysis was conducted through content analysis and thematic Qur'anic interpretation (tafsir maudhu'i), focusing on Qur'an 2:42, 48:18, and 13:20. The findings reveal that political issue diversion constitutes a form of information manipulation that contradicts the Qur'anic principles of honesty, trustworthiness, and truthfulness. Such practices generate breakdown zones characterized by democratic stagnation, social turbulence, virtual vandalism, and declining public trust in both government and mass media. Therefore, the Qur'an offers the values of honesty, integrity, accountability, and commitment to truth as ethical foundations for political communication in promoting transparent and just governance.

Review

This paper tackles a highly pertinent and timely subject: the deliberate diversion of political issues in the digital age and its profound impact on public trust and democratic processes. The interdisciplinary approach, uniquely integrating contemporary communication theories like hyperreality, breakdown zones, and virtual vandalism with a classical Qur'anic exegetical perspective, offers a novel and culturally rich lens through which to analyze a universal phenomenon. The ambition to reconstruct political communication ethics based on foundational Qur'anic values of honesty, integrity, accountability, and truthfulness is particularly commendable, providing a valuable framework for navigating the complexities of modern political discourse within a faith-based ethical system. The use of *tafsir maudhu'i* (thematic interpretation) on specific verses suggests a structured and scholarly method for deriving these ethical principles. While the premise is strong, several areas warrant further attention to strengthen the paper's overall impact. The abstract introduces "breakdown zones" and "virtual vandalism" as central concepts, yet their precise theoretical grounding, operationalization, and empirical manifestations within the study's context could benefit from more robust elaboration. Similarly, while a broad range of literature is cited, the methodology could more explicitly detail how diverse theories from communication studies, political philosophy, and media theory are synthesized with Qur'anic exegesis beyond a mere juxtaposition. The connection between the chosen Qur'anic verses (Q 2:42, 48:18, 13:20) and the specific findings on information manipulation and ethical reconstruction, while asserted, could be deepened to illustrate how these verses uniquely inform or refine the understanding of political communication ethics, rather than merely confirming general moral principles already present in the Qur'an. Despite these suggestions for refinement, this research presents a highly relevant and potentially impactful contribution to both Islamic studies and communication ethics. Its innovative blend of religious scholarship with an analysis of contemporary digital political phenomena positions it as a significant work that can inform discussions on ethical governance and responsible media consumption, especially in contexts where faith plays a crucial role in public life. The paper offers a compelling framework for understanding and mitigating the negative consequences of political issue diversion. With some clarification on conceptual definitions and a more explicit demonstration of the synergistic relationship between the diverse theoretical inputs, this study has the potential to make a substantial and unique contribution to the literature.
