Abstract

Red fruit (Pandanus conoideus Lamk.) is a local commodity in Nabire, Papua, with high nutritional and economic potential, particularly through the production of red fruit oil. However, the red fruit processing practices of the Wadio farmer group were still traditional, unstandardized, and poorly documented, resulting in low and inconsistent product quality and yield. This community service program aimed to improve both the production process and the empowerment level of the farmer group in terms of production, management, marketing, and socio–organizational aspects. The program was carried out in Wadio Atas, Nabire, using a participatory empowerment approach through socialization, technical training, hands-on mentoring, and simple evaluation. Baseline conditions were identified through observation and interviews, followed by pre- and post-training assessments of knowledge, practical skills, and satisfaction. The results show an improvement in process standardization, documentation of raw materials and yields, and understanding of basic business concepts. The majority of participants moved from relying on single-step, undocumented processing to applying multi-stage, documented standard operating procedures (SOP). Simple quantitative evaluation indicated that 95–100% of participants reached good to very good categories in knowledge and skills indicators after the program, and 98% expressed satisfaction with the activities. These changes reflect an increased empowerment level of the partner group, particularly in production and basic management capabilities, providing a foundation for further development of marketing and socio-economic impact

Review

This paper describes a highly relevant community service program aimed at standardizing red fruit oil production and empowering the Wadio farmer group in Nabire, Papua. The authors effectively identify a critical gap: despite the high nutritional and economic potential of red fruit, traditional processing methods led to inconsistent quality and low yields. The program's multi-pronged objective to enhance production processes alongside the group's empowerment across production, management, marketing, and socio-organizational aspects is commendable, directly addressing a fundamental need for sustainable development and improved livelihoods in the region. The methodology employed is well-suited for a community-based intervention, emphasizing a participatory empowerment approach. Through a structured program of socialization, technical training, hands-on mentoring, and evaluation, the initiative successfully guided the farmer group. The use of baseline assessments via observation and interviews, complemented by pre- and post-training evaluations of knowledge, practical skills, and satisfaction, provides a clear measure of impact. The results are compelling: a significant shift from traditional, undocumented practices to multi-stage, documented standard operating procedures (SOPs), leading to improved process standardization and documentation. Quantitative indicators, such as 95–100% of participants reaching good to very good categories in knowledge and skills post-program, and 98% satisfaction, underscore the immediate success and effectiveness of the training. This initiative's strength lies in its direct applicability and the tangible, positive changes it has brought to the Wadio farmer group, particularly in enhancing production efficiency and basic management capabilities. The program has demonstrably laid a strong foundation for future growth. While the abstract notes a "simple quantitative evaluation," the presented outcomes provide strong evidence of the program's immediate impact and success in achieving its core objectives. Future work could build upon this foundation by tracking long-term economic impacts, actual marketing successes, and further integrating the socio-organizational aspects to ensure sustained and comprehensive empowerment. This paper offers a valuable model for similar community-driven development initiatives in other agricultural communities.
