Abstract

Waste management is one of the serious urban problems, including in Krapyak Urban Village, West Semarang District, Semarang City. The low level of community participation in waste sorting at the source is one of the main obstacles to achieving effective and sustainable waste management. This community service activity aims to develop a community participation-based waste management model to support the local creative economy in Krapyak Urban Village. The implementation process was carried out through three stages: outreach/awareness-raising, training and implementation, and monitoring and evaluation. This activity was conducted in collaboration with the Krapyak community by involving the Waste Bank as a program partner. The results showed a significant improvement in community knowledge and skills in waste management; the average understanding score increased from 2.5 to 4.2 (on a 5-point scale), while waste sorting skills improved from 20% to 85%. The program also produced organic compost entirely derived from food waste and dried leaves, demonstrating the economic value that can be generated through waste management. This activity proves that a participatory approach based on local wisdom is effective in increasing environmental awareness while simultaneously creating economic opportunities for the community. The program is recommended to be continued sustainably by involving parents, the wider community, and relevant institutions to expand its impact and benefits.

Review

This paper presents a compelling account of a community empowerment initiative focused on developing a participatory waste management model in Krapyak Urban Village, Semarang, aimed at bolstering the local creative economy. The work addresses a critical and pervasive urban challenge: ineffective waste management compounded by low community participation in source separation. The authors are to be commended for tackling such a pertinent issue with a practical, community-centered approach, demonstrating a clear commitment to fostering both environmental sustainability and economic resilience at the local level. The methodology employed, structured around outreach, training/implementation, and monitoring/evaluation phases, appears robust for a community service activity, emphasizing strong collaboration with the Krapyak community and the local Waste Bank. The results are particularly impressive, showcasing a substantial increase in community knowledge regarding waste management, with understanding scores rising significantly from 2.5 to 4.2 on a 5-point scale. Equally noteworthy is the dramatic improvement in waste sorting skills, jumping from 20% to 85%. The tangible outcome of producing organic compost from food waste and dried leaves effectively illustrates the immediate economic value and potential for creative economy integration, providing concrete evidence of the model's effectiveness in simultaneously raising environmental awareness and generating economic opportunities. While the abstract clearly highlights the success of this initiative, future work or a more comprehensive publication could benefit from a deeper elucidation of the specific components of the 'participatory model' and how 'local wisdom' was integrated. Further detail on the mechanisms linking waste management directly to a broader 'creative economy' beyond compost production would also strengthen the narrative. The recommendation for sustainable continuation, involving parents, the wider community, and relevant institutions, is crucial and underscores the long-term vision of the program. Overall, this project offers valuable insights into effective community-based interventions for waste management, providing a strong foundation for replication and scaling in other urban contexts facing similar environmental and economic challenges.
