Abstract

Review

This article presents a timely and relevant exploration into the potential of Tanaman Obat Keluarga (TOGA) for hypertension prevention, a critical public health issue in Indonesia. The authors' initiative to highlight traditional knowledge and local wisdom as a strategic approach to combat non-communicable diseases is commendable. What sets this work apart is its explicit intention to frame the discussion within the Balinese cultural context, suggesting a nuanced understanding that integrates pharmacological potential with spiritual and social dimensions of traditional healing practices. This conceptual review offers a valuable perspective on revitalizing culturally embedded health strategies. The abstract effectively outlines the pharmacological basis for selected TOGA plants, such as celery, kumis kucing, and sambiloto, all recognized for their potential in modulating blood pressure through active compounds. Beyond the scientific rationale, the article promises to delve into the intrinsic value systems associated with TOGA utilization, encompassing spiritual and social aspects deeply integrated into traditional life. By emphasizing the integration of these practices into modern promotif and preventif strategies, the work positions itself as a bridge between age-old traditions and contemporary health interventions, advocating for a holistic approach to disease prevention. While the conceptual framework is compelling, a full exploration of this topic would benefit from a more detailed articulation of how the Balinese cultural context specifically informs the conceptual review – perhaps through examples of local practices, specific ethnobotanical studies, or a synthesis of existing literature that directly links these plants to traditional use in Bali for hypertension. Moving forward, the proposed recommendations for regulatory support and public education are crucial, but the article could further strengthen its argument by outlining concrete pathways or case studies where such integration has been successfully achieved or where challenges lie. This would provide a more robust foundation for the revitalization efforts advocated by the authors, ensuring a harmonious synergy between traditional wisdom and modern healthcare systems.
