Review

This paper presents a highly pertinent community service initiative focused on optimizing coastal cultural tourism in Tanjung Balai through the innovative approach of digitizing intangible cultural heritage, with a particular emphasis on engaging local students. The authors clearly articulate the core challenges hindering tourism development, primarily identifying significant competency gaps among community partners in cultural research, transcription, digital publication, and digital inventory of intangible cultural products. This robust problem identification sets a strong foundation for the project, highlighting the critical need for interventions that empower local stakeholders, especially the youth, in safeguarding and promoting their unique cultural assets. The focus on intangible heritage is particularly commendable, recognizing its often-undervalued yet vital role in enriching cultural tourism experiences. To address these identified competency deficits, the project outlines a well-conceived methodology centered on practical skill development. The intervention includes comprehensive training modules covering cultural heritage research, transcription, digitalization of intangible heritage, and the proficient use of a database website for cultural inventory. These targeted training sessions directly respond to the problems previously identified, ensuring a holistic transfer of essential knowledge and skills to the participants. The strategic decision to engage students as direct beneficiaries and active "partners" (mitra) is a notable strength, as it promises not only immediate impact through skill acquisition but also fosters a sustainable, long-term commitment to cultural preservation and digital literacy within the community. The outcomes of this community service project are particularly significant, culminating in the successful development of a database application for Tanjung Balai's tangible and intangible cultural heritage tourism. This tangible product holds substantial potential to streamline and optimize historical-cultural tourism activities by making local heritage more accessible and discoverable to a wider audience. Moreover, the reported increase in competence and motivation among the partners to actively promote historical tourism programs stands as a crucial indicator of the project's success, demonstrating its effectiveness in fostering engagement beyond just technical outputs. This initiative serves as an exemplary model for integrating community empowerment, digital innovation, and heritage preservation to drive sustainable local development and enhance cultural awareness.
