Abstract

Review

The article, "O macellum de Mirobriga (Santiago do Cacém, Portugal): tipologia, funcionalidades e modelos de inspiração," presents a focused and timely study of the macellum within the Roman city of Mirobriga. This paper significantly contributes to our understanding of the urban development of Mirobriga, a site increasingly recognized for its comprehensive Romanization during the 1st century CE. By concentrating on a crucial element of its commercial infrastructure, the authors aim to meticulously describe and discuss the architectural characteristics, functional aspects, and typological context of this important public building, following a period of incipent late Republican activity. A core strength of this research lies in its detailed exposition of the macellum's architectural results, which form the bedrock for interpreting its typology and functionalities. The abstract clearly indicates a robust comparative analysis, positioning the Mirobriga macellum against other exemplars from the imperial West. This comparative framework is essential for understanding regional variations, architectural influences, and the broader diffusion of Roman market building designs. Furthermore, the proposition of three distinct evolutionary phases for the building promises to shed valuable light on its chronological development and adaptations, offering a nuanced diachronic perspective on Roman construction and urban planning at the site. This article is poised to be an important addition to the scholarship on Roman urbanism and commercial architecture, particularly within the Iberian Peninsula. Its rigorous methodological approach, encompassing detailed architectural analysis, typological classification, and diachronic reconstruction, suggests a comprehensive contribution to the field. The findings will undoubtedly enrich our understanding of economic life and urban development in Mirobriga specifically, and Roman Lusitania more generally, providing valuable data for comparative studies across the Roman Empire. The paper thus represents a commendable effort to thoroughly document and interpret a key component of Mirobriga’s public identity.
