Abstract

Review

This article sets out to critically examine the role and positioning of education within John Rawls's influential theory of justice as fairness. The central hypothesis guiding the research is that Rawls's framework, despite its comprehensive scope, ultimately assigned an insufficient and secondary place to education, effectively sub-thematizing it across his major works. The authors posit that, given education's undeniable importance for the development of just democratic societies, it merits a far more central position in contemporary theories of justice than Rawls afforded it. This premise lays the groundwork for a detailed re-evaluation of how education is conceived within a foundational liberal theory. To substantiate their claim, the authors propose an in-depth analysis of education-related aspects found in Rawls's seminal texts: *A Theory of Justice*, *Political Liberalism*, and *Justice as Fairness: A Restatement*. The investigation traces how the role of education evolves across these works. Initially, Rawls appears concerned with a form of moral education tied to the development of autonomy and the constitution of a sense of justice. Subsequently, the focus shifts towards a more political and civic understanding of education, emphasizing citizenship in the face of pluralism and diversity characteristic of modern democracies. The paper argues that, despite these shifts, education remained marginalized due to Rawls's primary commitment to elaborating an ideal theory for a well-ordered society, which inherently limited its engagement with existing inequities requiring rectification. The article concludes by advocating for a significant re-envisioning of education's place, arguing that its centrality to the constitution of just democratic societies necessitates its location at the very core of the basic structure. The authors propose that education should be understood as a fundamental social institution and an inherent requirement of justice itself, thereby granting it a far greater centrality than that conceded by Rawls. This critical engagement with Rawls's theory and the subsequent proposal for a robust re-centering of education offers a valuable contribution to ongoing discussions on the relationship between educational policy, social justice, and the practical implementation of liberal ideals in diverse societies.
