Abstract

This study aims to analyze the radicalism-terrorism narrative on online media websites in 2022 as an effort to foster moderate understanding in accessing digital media. This research method was carried out using netnography. The results of research on indicators of radicalism found evidence that it was still high. Some of the narratives that were developed became the tendency of each media. This means that not all Islamic media are massively framing the caliphate issue. This fact was found based on searching through keywords on each website that was the object of research. For example, in the media eramuslim.com, the percentage of narratives framing the issue of the caliphate is still low when compared to other narratives

Review

The study addresses a highly pertinent and critical issue concerning the proliferation of radicalism-terrorism narratives on online platforms, particularly in the Indonesian context as implied by the title. The aim to analyze these narratives as an effort to foster moderate understanding in digital media consumption is commendable and aligns with global efforts to counter online extremism. The use of netnography as a methodological approach holds promise for exploring digital cultural phenomena, making the study's intent to delve into the nuances of online discourse an important contribution to the field of media studies and counter-radicalization research. While the topic is relevant, the abstract presents significant methodological and conceptual ambiguities that limit a full appreciation of the research. The description of netnography is very brief, lacking crucial details regarding the selection criteria for websites, the keyword strategy employed, the specific indicators used to identify "radicalism," and the process by which "percentages of narratives" were calculated. The finding that "indicators of radicalism found evidence that it was still high" is vague and lacks comparative context or specific qualitative examples to substantiate this claim. Furthermore, while the observation that "not all Islamic media are massively framing the caliphate issue" is interesting, it needs to be supported by a more robust presentation of the diverse narratives encountered and a clearer explanation of how these 'tendencies of each media' are identified and analyzed. The connection between the *analysis of narratives* and the *fostering of moderate understanding* remains largely underexplored in the abstract, making it difficult to assess how the study's results directly contribute to its stated overarching aim. To enhance the rigor and impact of this study, the authors should significantly elaborate on their methodological framework, providing explicit details on data collection, sampling of websites, keyword selection, and the analytical framework used to categorize and quantify radical narratives. Future iterations would greatly benefit from presenting more concrete examples of the identified narratives, perhaps through illustrative quotes or thematic summaries, to give readers a clearer picture of the content being analyzed. Crucially, the paper needs to explicitly articulate how its findings can translate into actionable strategies for fostering moderate understanding, moving beyond mere analysis to propose practical implications for educators, policymakers, or digital media literacy initiatives. By strengthening these areas, the research has the potential to make a more substantial theoretical and practical contribution to the critical domain of countering online radicalization.
