Abstract

Poverty is a complex and multifaceted issue that extends beyond governmental concerns, encompassing the teachings of religious texts such as the Quran and the Bible. This article employs a qualitative approach and descriptive analysis to investigate how these religious texts approach poverty, and how they propose solutions to alleviate it. The study reveals that poverty is a societal malady that receives significant attention in both the Quran and the Bible. The Quran employs various terms, such as "miskin," "faqir," "da'if mustad'afun," "arazil or arzalun," "al-yatîm or al-yatâma," "al-sâil," and "al-mahrûm," to describe individuals who are economically challenged, while the Bible uses terms such as "ani," "dal," "ebyon," "penes" and "ptochos." It is noteworthy that the term "ptochos" in the Bible is analogous to "faqir" in the Quran, and similarly, the term "miskin" in the Quran is comparable to "penes" in the Bible. Moreover, the solutions to poverty proposed by both the Quran and the Bible are three-fold. First, a reconstruction of the theology of poverty is required. Second, collective awareness and efforts to eradicate poverty are necessary. Finally, a strong work ethic and spirit must be fostered to overcome poverty. In conclusion, poverty is a pressing issue that is addressed in both the Quran and the Bible, with proposed solutions emphasizing theological reconstruction, collective action, and a strong work ethic.

Review

This paper, titled "Melihat Titik Temu Kemiskinan Dalam Pandangan al-Qur’an Dan Alkitab," addresses a highly pertinent and interdisciplinary topic concerning the theological and ethical dimensions of poverty. Employing a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis, the study effectively sets out to explore the shared perspectives and proposed solutions to poverty within the Quran and the Bible. The abstract efficiently communicates the central premise: that poverty is a significant societal concern universally acknowledged by both foundational religious texts, laying the groundwork for a comparative analysis of their conceptualizations and remedies. A core strength highlighted in the abstract is the comparative linguistic analysis of terms used to denote economically challenged individuals. The identification of analogous terms such as "ptochos" in the Bible with "faqir" in the Quran, and "penes" with "miskin," offers valuable insight into the shared understanding of poverty across these traditions. Furthermore, the article articulates a compelling three-fold set of solutions advocated by both religious texts: advocating for a reconstruction of the theology of poverty, emphasizing the necessity of collective awareness and concerted efforts for eradication, and fostering a robust work ethic. These proposed solutions demonstrate a profound intersection between religious ethics and socio-economic development strategies. While the abstract provides a strong summary of the article's findings, a deeper dive into the methodology and the specific mechanisms of the proposed solutions would significantly enhance the full paper. For instance, elaborating on the precise methods of textual analysis used to identify the terminological equivalences and the process by which "theology of poverty" reconstruction is envisioned in each text would add substantial rigor. Future iterations might also explore how these religious prescriptions translate into contemporary policy recommendations or community-level interventions, bridging the gap between sacred texts and practical application. Despite these potential areas for further elaboration, the paper makes a valuable contribution to interfaith studies and the discourse on poverty alleviation, offering a compelling argument for the enduring relevance of religious perspectives on social justice.
