Abstract

This study explores religious moderation on social media, which has become the main platform for disseminating information and building interactions between individuals. However, in the context of religious plurality, using social media often poses challenges to religious moderation. This study will explore the use of social media in religious moderation, whether as a bridge or as a wall in providing space for interfaith dialog. Through a qualitative approach by analyzing controversial phenomena, user perceptions, and the role of algorithms. This research aims to identify critical points that affect the success or failure of religious moderation in creating an inclusive and productive dialog space. The researcher found that the narratives on social media have become conservative, allowing the free transmission of religious views without a filter. This research suggests that moderates should be more active in filling the spiritual space of the people so that social media can be a positive bridge to promote religious moderation. The research provides practical implications by detailing findings related to positive dialog, the role of opinion leaders, and the challenge of hoaxes. This can help design better strategies and policies to promote religious moderation on social media.

Review

This study tackles a highly pertinent and critical issue: the role of social media in facilitating or hindering religious moderation, particularly within contexts of religious plurality. The central question—whether social media acts as a bridge or a wall for interfaith dialogue—is both timely and profoundly important in our increasingly digital and interconnected world. The qualitative approach, focusing on controversial phenomena, user perceptions, and algorithmic influence, indicates a robust methodology designed to unpack the complexities of this challenge. The research sets out to identify critical junctures affecting the success or failure of religious moderation online, promising valuable insights into creating inclusive digital spaces. The abstract highlights several significant findings and implications. Notably, the observation that social media narratives have trended towards conservatism, allowing for unfiltered transmission of religious views, points to a clear and concerning dynamic. The study’s primary recommendation—that moderates must actively engage and populate the digital spiritual space—is a direct and actionable call to counter this trend, envisioning social media as a positive force for moderation. Furthermore, the practical implications regarding positive dialogue, the influential role of opinion leaders, and the pervasive challenge of hoaxes underscore the research's utility, providing concrete areas for strategic intervention. These insights are crucial for understanding the intricate interplay between digital platforms and socio-religious dynamics. Overall, this research promises to make a substantial contribution to the understanding of religious moderation in the digital age. While the abstract provides a compelling overview of the study's scope and findings, future dissemination could benefit from more specific details regarding the methodology, such as the specific controversial phenomena analyzed or the techniques used to gather user perceptions. Nevertheless, the identified critical points and the actionable recommendations offer a strong foundation for developing more effective strategies and policies. By illuminating how social media can be leveraged as a positive bridge rather than a divisive wall, this work holds significant potential to inform efforts aimed at fostering a more inclusive and productive interfaith dialogue online.
