Abstract

This study examines the role of integrating national defense values among the younger generation in strengthening national character, particularly through an understanding of Indonesia's struggle for independence (1945-1949) in East Sumatra. The research background is based on the phenomenon of weak historical and patriotic awareness among adolescents, which has the potential to reduce social cohesion and commitment to national unity. The main objectives of the study are: (1) to identify the level of knowledge and attitudes of the younger generation towards the struggle for independence in East Sumatra, (2) to evaluate the effectiveness of national defense-based education programs in increasing historical awareness, and (3) to formulate an integrative strategy that can be adopted by educational institutions and the community. The results of the study indicate that only 34.7% of respondents have adequate knowledge about the struggle for independence in East Sumatra, while 41.2% demonstrate low patriotic attitudes. Participation in the national defense program was shown to have a significant positive effect on increasing knowledge (β=0.31, p<0.01) and patriotic attitudes (β=0.27, p<0.01). The regression model explained 48% of the variance in changes in patriotic attitudes (R²=0.48). Additional qualitative analysis through in-depth interviews revealed that the main inhibiting factors were the lack of a local history-based curriculum and inadequate supporting facilities.

Review

This paper addresses a highly pertinent issue concerning the integration of national defense values among the younger generation in strengthening national character, specifically through the lens of Indonesia's struggle for independence (1945-1949) in East Sumatra. The authors correctly identify a critical societal challenge: the declining historical and patriotic awareness among adolescents, which threatens social cohesion and national unity. This foundational problem provides a strong rationale for the research, making it relevant to educators, policymakers, and community leaders. The study sets out clear objectives: to assess youth knowledge and attitudes, evaluate national defense-based education programs, and formulate integrative strategies. The findings present a concerning picture, revealing that a significant majority of respondents possess inadequate knowledge (only 34.7% adequate) and low patriotic attitudes (41.2% low) regarding the local struggle for independence. Crucially, the research demonstrates a statistically significant positive effect of participation in national defense programs on both increasing knowledge (β=0.31, p<0.01) and patriotic attitudes (β=0.27, p<0.01), with the regression model explaining a substantial 48% of the variance in patriotic attitudes. Complementary qualitative insights pinpoint the lack of a local history-based curriculum and insufficient supporting facilities as major impediments. The paper's strength lies in its empirical evidence for the effectiveness of national defense programs in fostering historical awareness and patriotism, offering a tangible pathway for intervention. The identification of specific inhibiting factors provides actionable insights for curriculum developers and educational institutions. While the abstract strongly outlines the problem and findings, the full paper would benefit from elaborating on the specific research methodology (e.g., sample size, design of the education program, precise definitions of "national defense values") and providing detailed descriptions of the "integrative strategies" formulated. This study serves as a valuable contribution to the discourse on character building and historical education, urging a more focused approach to local history integration and resource allocation to safeguard national identity for future generations.
