Elderly individuals undergo various physical, psychological, and social changes that increase their risk of developing diseases, including hypertension. As hypertension is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke, blood pressure management is crucial. Self-care management plays a vital role in maintaining the health of the elderly, but it is influenced by self-efficacy, which is the elderly's belief in their ability to effectively care for themselves and adhere to treatment. This study aimed to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and self-care management in elderly individuals with hypertension in the working area of the Rangkasbitung Community Health Center. The research employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional study design, and data analysis was performed using the Pearson Chi-Square test. Samples were selected using a purposive sampling method based on criteria predetermined by the researchers, followed by a quota sampling technique of 60 respondents who had a history of hypertension and were over 60 years old. The study results showed that 22 respondents (36.7%) had self-efficacy in the sufficient category, and 15 respondents (25%) were classified as lacking. Regarding self-care management, 40 respondents (66.7%) were in the poor category. The Pearson Chi-Square test yielded a p-value of 0.028, indicating a significant relationship between self-efficacy and self-care management in elderly individuals with hypertension.
This study addresses a crucial public health issue by investigating the relationship between self-efficacy and self-care management among elderly hypertensive patients. Given the increasing prevalence of hypertension in the aging population and its significant contribution to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, understanding factors that promote effective self-care is paramount. The authors clearly establish the relevance of self-efficacy as a key determinant of health behaviors, providing a sound theoretical basis for their research objective to determine this relationship within a specific community health center context in Indonesia. This focused approach offers valuable insights for localized health interventions. Methodologically, the study employed a quantitative, cross-sectional design, which is appropriate for identifying associations between variables at a single point in time. The use of purposive and quota sampling to select 60 elderly respondents with a history of hypertension demonstrates a systematic approach to participant recruitment. The Pearson Chi-Square test was suitably applied to analyze the relationship between the categorical variables. The preliminary findings, indicating that a substantial proportion of respondents had either lacking (25%) or merely sufficient (36.7%) self-efficacy, and a striking 66.7% were in the poor category for self-care management, highlight a significant area of concern and underscore the urgency of addressing these issues within the target population. The core finding of a statistically significant relationship between self-efficacy and self-care management (p-value = 0.028) is a valuable contribution, reinforcing existing literature that links psychological factors to health outcomes. This suggests that interventions aimed at boosting self-efficacy in elderly hypertensive patients could lead to improved self-care practices and, consequently, better blood pressure control and reduced complications. While the cross-sectional design limits causal inference, these findings provide a strong foundation for future research, such as longitudinal studies or intervention trials, to explore the mechanisms and effectiveness of self-efficacy-enhancing programs. Such efforts could greatly benefit the health and well-being of the elderly population in similar community health settings.
