Abstract

Personal hygiene practices during menstruation are an important aspect of maintaining the reproductive health of adolescent girls. Poor hygiene during menstruation can increase the risk of reproductive tract infections. However, many adolescent girls still pay little attention to menstrual hygiene, such as changing sanitary pads less than twice a day, not washing their hands before and after changing pads, not changing underwear regularly, and disposing of used pads carelessly. This study aimed to examine the relationship between knowledge and environmental factors with personal hygiene practices during menstruation among junior high school girls. A cross-sectional design was used with a total of 53 eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 19 Bekasi, selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire and data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed a significant relationship between knowledge and personal hygiene practices during menstruation (p = 0.03; p < 0.05). In addition, there was a significant relationship between the home environment and personal hygiene practices (p = 0.046; p < 0.05). However, no significant relationship was found between the school environment and personal hygiene practices (p = 0.72; p > 0.05). It can be concluded that knowledge and the home environment very important role in menstrual personal hygiene practices

Review

This study, titled "Hubungan Pengetahuan dan Faktor Lingkungan dengan Praktik Personal Hygiene saat Menstruasi pada Remaja Putri di Tingkat Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP)", addresses a critically important public health issue: menstrual hygiene practices among adolescent girls. The authors aimed to investigate the relationship between knowledge, home environment, and school environment with personal hygiene practices during menstruation among 53 eighth-grade students in Bekasi. Utilizing a cross-sectional design and Chi-Square analysis, the study found significant associations between both knowledge and the home environment with personal hygiene practices, while the school environment showed no significant relationship. This research offers valuable preliminary insights into factors influencing menstrual hygiene, highlighting key areas for intervention. The strength of this paper lies in its focus on a highly relevant and often overlooked aspect of adolescent reproductive health. The clear articulation of the problem – poor hygiene leading to increased infection risk – underscores the importance of the study's objective. The identification of knowledge and the home environment as significant predictors provides actionable information for health educators and policymakers. Understanding that the home environment plays a crucial role suggests that interventions should not solely target school-based education but also engage families and guardians to foster better hygiene habits. The findings are presented clearly, and the statistical analysis method (Chi-Square) is appropriate for the type of data collected to explore associations between the variables. While the study provides valuable insights, certain limitations should be considered. The relatively small sample size (N=53) and the use of purposive sampling restrict the generalizability of the findings beyond the specific school in Bekasi. A larger, more diverse, and randomly selected sample would strengthen the external validity. Furthermore, the cross-sectional design prevents the establishment of causal relationships; longitudinal studies would be beneficial to understand how knowledge and environmental factors *influence* practice over time. The reliance on self-reported questionnaire data for sensitive topics like personal hygiene might also be subject to social desirability bias. Future research could benefit from exploring a broader range of environmental factors beyond just "home" and "school" (e.g., socio-economic status, parental education, access to facilities, peer influence) and employing mixed methods approaches to gain a deeper understanding of the barriers and facilitators to optimal menstrual hygiene.
