Abstract

Kampung Suaran Pond is one of the areas that will implement the SECURE pond concept. This pond concept can help increase pond productivity in a sustainable manner. Increased productivity in ponds is highly dependent on phytoplankton abundance and water quality. The purpose of this study was to determine the abundance of phytoplankton before becoming a secure pond and the relationship of phytoplankton abundance with nitrate and phosphate content. This research was conducted from January to May 2023. The sampling method was based on purposive sampling, adjusting the representative pond category according to the SECURE program monitoring. The results showed the abundance of phytoplankton in surface and bottom waters averaged 280 ind/L–760 ind/L. The number of phytoplankton identified consisted of 17 species and 3 classes, namely Bacillariophyceae (76,5%), Cyanophyceae (5,9%), and Dinophyceae (17,6%). The lowest nitrate concentration was found at point II at 0.066 mg/L and the highest at point I at 0,641 mg/L. The lowest phosphate concentration was at point II of 0,120 mg/L, and the highest was at point I of 0,438 mg/L. In ponds in Suaran village, there is a relationship between phytoplankton abundance with nitrate (r = 0,817) and phosphate (r = 0,893) in the surface and bottom waters of the pond, which shows a strong relationship.

Review

This study presents valuable baseline data regarding phytoplankton abundance and key nutrient concentrations in ponds at Kampung Suaran, prior to their full implementation as "SECURE ponds." The overarching objective to understand the relationship between phytoplankton and nitrate and phosphate levels is highly relevant, given the SECURE concept's aim for sustainable productivity, which is intrinsically linked to primary productivity and water quality. The research efficiently addresses its stated purpose by quantifying these parameters and exploring their interdependencies, providing an essential foundation for future monitoring and management strategies within the SECURE program. The methodology employed purposive sampling over a five-month period from January to May 2023, yielding specific insights into the pond ecosystem. Key findings indicate a phytoplankton abundance ranging from 280 to 760 ind/L, composed of 17 species across three classes, predominantly Bacillariophyceae (76.5%). Nutrient analysis revealed nitrate concentrations between 0.066 mg/L and 0.641 mg/L, and phosphate levels between 0.120 mg/L and 0.438 mg/L. Critically, the study identified strong positive correlations between phytoplankton abundance and both nitrate (r = 0.817) and phosphate (r = 0.893) across both surface and bottom waters, suggesting a significant influence of these nutrients on primary production. Overall, this research makes a pertinent contribution by establishing crucial preliminary data for ponds slated for the SECURE concept. The identified strong relationships between phytoplankton abundance and nutrient levels are an important finding, underscoring the need for careful nutrient management within these systems to optimize productivity. For a full manuscript, further discussion on the ecological implications of these specific nutrient concentrations, the dominant phytoplankton classes, and a more robust statistical analysis beyond correlation coefficients (e.g., regression analysis, significance testing) would enhance its impact. Nevertheless, as a foundational study, it successfully provides a clear snapshot of the pond conditions and the vital ecological interactions at play, offering actionable information for the sustainable development of the SECURE pond program.
