Abstract

Body Scrub Cream contains coarse grains that function as sanders, or obrasivers, which can remove dead cells from the epidermis. Torch ginger flowers have antioxidant activity produced in the form of secondary metabolites, namely the flavonoid group, the main components of flavonoids, namely quercetin and kaempferol, function as antioxidants. The purpose of this study was to make a body scrub and test antioxidant activity with the DPPH method (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) is a stable radical, which can be used to evaluate antioxidant performance, with experimental methods. The results of this study were that Torch ginger flower extract can be used as a body scrub cream preparation with extract concentrations of 3%, 5%, and 7%. The antioxidant activity of the body scrub preparation formula III with an IC50 value of 29.66 (Very strong), formula I with an IC50 value of 71.24 and formula II with an IC50 value of 52.30 has strong antioxidant activity, which has a very strong IC50, namely Formula III with an extract concentration of 7%.

Review

This study presents an investigation into the formulation of a body scrub cream incorporating *Etlingera elatior* (Torch Ginger Flower) extract, with a primary focus on evaluating its antioxidant potential. The selection of *Etlingera elatior* is justified by its known content of secondary metabolites, particularly flavonoids like quercetin and kaempferol, which are recognized for their antioxidant properties. The overall objective to develop a natural, antioxidant-rich body scrub is timely and relevant, aligning with current trends in cosmeceutical product development that leverage botanical ingredients for skin health. The methodology employed an experimental design to formulate the body scrub at three different extract concentrations (3%, 5%, and 7%), followed by an assessment of their antioxidant activity using the well-established DPPH radical scavenging method. The results demonstrate successful incorporation of the extract into a scrub cream base. Importantly, a clear dose-dependent increase in antioxidant activity was observed, with Formula III (containing 7% extract) exhibiting 'very strong' antioxidant activity, indicated by an impressive IC50 value of 29.66 µg/mL. Formulas I and II also showed 'strong' activity with IC50 values of 71.24 µg/mL and 52.30 µg/mL, respectively, affirming the potential of *Etlingera elatior* in this application. While the study successfully demonstrates the antioxidant efficacy of *Etlingera elatior* extract in a body scrub formulation, the abstract presents a limited scope regarding other crucial aspects of product development. Key details such as the specific composition of the scrub base, the stability profile (e.g., pH, viscosity, phase separation), and detailed sensory evaluation or consumer acceptability tests are not mentioned. Furthermore, information on the extraction method and solvent, statistical analysis of the results, and a comparison with a control or a commercially available scrub would significantly enhance the study's rigor. Future work should ideally expand to include comprehensive formulation characterization, safety assessments (e.g., irritation tests), and *in vivo* studies to substantiate the observed antioxidant benefits on human skin, paving the way for its practical application.
