Abstract

Amidst a tide of civil rights progress in the late 60s and early 70s, the US enacted Title IX as part of the Education Amendments. The purpose of which was to prevent the discrimination of women in both curricular and extra-curricular activities and began to address gender based sexual violence and harassment in education. The amendment affected all educational institutions that received federal funding. The long-standing impact still seen today in the United States revolves largely around sports-participation equity and gender based sexual harassment; however, initially the amendment aimed to combat much larger discriminatory gaps such as involvement in educational extra-curricular activities, enrollment in male-dominated programs, and discrimination in the hiring of women in academic faculties.In the following two decades, women would go on to make major strides in academia. Between 1972 and 1995, females went from making up 15% of collegiate athletes to 37%, and between 1973 and 1993, the percentage of female high school graduates attending college went from 43% to 63%. [1].This study utilizes both a Difference in Difference and Regression Discontinuity Design approach to estimate the effect of Title IX on female educational attainment. We provide statistical evidence that suggests that Title IX positively impacted educational attainment for females in the US over the 1970s.
