Abstract

Review

The submitted work, titled "EDUKASI GAYA HIDUP SEHAT DAN DETEKSI DINI PENYAKIT BAGI LANSIA," presents a highly relevant community service initiative addressing the critical issue of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among the elderly in Indonesia. The abstract clearly outlines the rationale, citing concerning prevalence rates of hypertension and diabetes in the elderly, both nationally and specifically in Langkat Regency. As an implementation of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, the project aimed to enhance the health status of 35 elderly individuals in Desa Pantai Cermin through education on healthy lifestyles and early disease detection. The reported outcomes indicate a positive impact, with participants showing increased knowledge and awareness regarding these crucial health aspects. A significant strength of this abstract lies in its well-defined approach and practical interventions. The focus on key components of a healthy lifestyle—balanced diet, regular physical activity, and stress management—alongside critical early detection screenings for blood pressure and blood sugar, demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of geriatric health needs. The methodology, incorporating a blend of lectures, interactive discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on practice, appears well-suited to engage the target demographic and facilitate practical learning. This multi-modal delivery likely contributed to the observed improvement in knowledge and awareness, fulfilling the core objective of the community service program and highlighting its immediate positive impact on the beneficiaries. While the abstract effectively communicates the intervention's success in increasing knowledge and awareness, there are aspects that could be further elaborated for a more robust academic contribution. For instance, detailing the specific metrics used to evaluate the "increase in knowledge" (e.g., pre-post test scores, qualitative assessments) would strengthen the evidence base. Furthermore, although the abstract expresses a hope for "changes in behavior and improved health status," future work could benefit from incorporating a longer-term follow-up to objectively measure actual behavioral modifications and physiological health outcomes, rather than just immediate awareness. Given the modest sample size of 35 participants, discussing the potential for scalability and sustainability of such interventions, or the implications for broader public health policy in similar rural settings, would also enhance the paper's overall impact and generalizability.
