Abstract

Review

The article "DO TEXTO À IMAGEM," a refined segment of a master's dissertation, undertakes a pertinent examination of the translation of literary classics into new media formats. Focusing specifically on the adaptations of Machado de Assis's *Dom Casmurro* into comic books, the study critically reflects on how this transposition from a verbal text to a verbo-visual code not only updates the seminal novel but also significantly broadens its modes of reception. This central premise highlights a vital aspect of literary studies: the enduring life and adaptability of classic works in contemporary cultural landscapes, demonstrating their capacity for perpetual renewal and engagement with diverse audiences. Methodologically, the research employs a qualitative and interpretive approach, grounded in a rigorous intersemiotic comparative analysis. It meticulously contrasts the original Machadian novel with two distinct comic book adaptations, paying particular attention to crucial narrative elements such as the narrator's point of view and the persistent ambiguity surrounding the character of Capitu. Theoretically, the study is robustly anchored in established frameworks, drawing on Linda Hutcheon’s theories of adaptation (2013) and integrating concepts of intertextuality as articulated by Julia Kristeva (1974) and Umberto Eco (1989). Through these lenses, the article successfully frames adaptation not merely as a transformation, but as a dynamic and creative dialogue across different media and contextual specificities. The central argument posits that these comic book adaptations serve a dual purpose: they effectively bridge the gap between the classic and new generations of readers, while simultaneously offering a sophisticated critical and aesthetic reading that meticulously preserves the intricate complexity of the original work. By demonstrating how *Dom Casmurro* continues to renew and resonate across diverse forms and platforms, the article underscores the concept of a "living classic." This research makes a valuable contribution to both adaptation studies and the appreciation of Brazilian literature, affirming the enduring narrative power and the enigmatic allure of questions like Capitu's fidelity, which have captivated readers for over a century. The study effectively illustrates the critical role of intersemiotic adaptation in sustaining the cultural relevance and intellectual vibrancy of canonical texts.
