Abstract

This article explores the logical dimensions of Ricoeur’s definition of Discursivity. This is a key aspect for understanding not only the general meaning of Hermeneutics, but also the particular relevance of the concept in the author’s practical philosophy. Ricoeur developed his theory of Discourse after introducing a semiologic turn to his Phenomenological work. Discourse is not reduced to immediate (dialogical) communication, even though it begins with it. Taken as a principle of discursive historicity, text plays a major role in the constitution of this theory – it is considered as a model for detachment in communication. Ricoeur distinguishes different levels of meaning (word, sentence, text, culture) and separates three discursive dimensions, irreducible to one another: Rhetorics, Poetics and Hermeneutics. At this point, the article should explain the role of Hermeneutics, particularly when compared to the other two disciplines. The article will conclude by underlining the role of Reflexivity and the analogical unity of Discursivity.

Review

This article proposes a timely and significant exploration into the logical dimensions underpinning Paul Ricoeur's concept of Discursivity, a foundational element not only for grasping the breadth of his hermeneutics but also for appreciating its practical philosophical implications. The abstract effectively outlines the article's trajectory, promising an in-depth analysis of Ricoeur's development of Discourse following his semiologic turn, distinguishing it from immediate communication and emphasizing the pivotal role of text as a model for detachment and a principle of discursive historicity. A particular strength highlighted in the abstract is the intention to meticulously unpack Ricoeur's distinction between various levels of meaning (word, sentence, text, culture) and his tripartite division of discursive dimensions into Rhetorics, Poetics, and Hermeneutics. The explicit commitment to explaining the unique role of Hermeneutics within this framework, especially in contrast to the other two disciplines, suggests a nuanced and critical engagement with Ricoeur's thought. This comparative analysis is crucial for a deeper understanding of Ricoeur’s architectural approach to interpretation and meaning-making. While the abstract provides a compelling roadmap, the success of the article will hinge on the rigor and clarity with which these "logical dimensions" are precisely defined and elaborated throughout the argument. A detailed explanation of how text serves as a model for detachment and how this mechanism operates logically within Ricoeur's system would be particularly valuable. The promised conclusion, linking Reflexivity and the analogical unity of Discursivity, offers a strong potential synthesis, but the journey to this conclusion must convincingly demonstrate the coherent logical framework that ties these disparate elements together. This promises to be a valuable contribution to Ricoeurian scholarship if the logical explanation is robustly developed.
