Review

This study tackles a highly pertinent issue in contemporary higher education: the intricate relationship between perfectionism and academic burnout among university students. Acknowledging the escalating academic demands and their potential psychological toll, the paper zeroes in on perfectionism as a significant contributing factor. The specific focus on students at IAIN Fattahul Muluk Papua Jayapura offers a unique and valuable geographical and institutional context, promising insights that may enhance our understanding beyond more frequently studied student populations. The aim to comprehensively investigate these phenomena is well-articulated and timely, given the critical implications for student welfare and academic achievement. Methodologically, the research adopts a robust qualitative approach framed by a social phenomenology paradigm. This choice is particularly apt for exploring the nuanced, lived experiences of students grappling with perfectionism and burnout, allowing for a deep understanding of their perspectives. The use of purposive sampling ensures the selection of participants most relevant to the research questions, enhancing the richness and depth of the data. Furthermore, the combination of participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation for data collection provides a strong foundation for triangulation, bolstering the credibility of the findings. The application of a flow model for data analysis—involving data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing—demonstrates a systematic and rigorous approach to interpreting the qualitative information gathered. The findings offer critical distinctions regarding the nature of perfectionism, highlighting its dual impact on academic dynamics. The study insightfully reveals that self-oriented perfectionism can be an adaptive force, fostering intrinsic motivation and elevating academic quality. Conversely, perfectionism driven by social demands and an excessive fear of errors emerges as a maladaptive trait, precipitating anxiety and dysfunctional academic behaviors. These contrasting facets of perfectionism are shown to directly contribute to academic burnout, characterized by emotional exhaustion, diminished academic efficacy, and overwhelming pressure stemming from demanding workloads and resource imbalances. This nuanced understanding provides valuable implications for developing targeted interventions and support systems within higher education to promote healthy academic pursuits while mitigating the adverse effects of maladaptive perfectionism.
