This study aims to reveal the meaning of semiotic signs in the novel Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory. This research uses descriptive qualitative method, with the main data in the form of quotations in the novel analyzed as signs in the form of icons, indexes, and symbols. The results of the analysis show that the novel contains various forms of icons such as the sound of waves, the aroma of cooking, and visual images that resemble the original object. Meanwhile, indexes are found through signs that indicate presence or effect, such as the smell of cigarettes and the sound of knocking on the door. Symbols appear in the form of objects or events that have conventional or cultural meanings, such as prisons and fight songs. All these signs reflect the social, political and humanitarian meanings that the author wants to convey. Review

This study undertakes a semiotic analysis of Leila S. Chudori's poignant novel, *Laut Bercerita*, utilizing the comprehensive framework of Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory. The choice of both the novel and the theoretical approach is highly commendable, as *Laut Bercerita* offers a rich tapestry for interpretive exploration, and Peirce's trichotomy provides a robust lens for dissecting its inherent meanings. The research clearly articulates a descriptive qualitative methodology, aiming to identify and interpret signs within the text as icons, indexes, and symbols. This methodical approach promises a systematic uncovering of the novel's semiotic layers, setting a strong foundation for the investigation. The abstract effectively summarizes the key findings, providing concrete examples for each category of semiotic sign. The identification of 'suara ombak' and 'aroma masakan' as icons, 'bau rokok' and 'suara ketukan pintu' as indexes, and 'penjara' and 'lagu perjuangan' as symbols demonstrates a clear and practical application of Peirce's principles. Crucially, the study doesn't merely identify these signs but connects them to the deeper social, political, and humanitarian messages the author intends to convey. This assertion that Peirce's semiotic approach enables a more profound understanding of the novel's 'hidden messages' underscores the potential value and contribution of this research to literary criticism and semiotic studies. While the abstract offers a compelling preview, the full paper would benefit from a more detailed discussion on the *interplay* and *evolution* of these sign types throughout the narrative, illustrating how they collectively build complex meanings and resonate with the reader. Further engagement with the nuances of interpretation, considering potential cultural specificities or ambiguities of certain symbols, could also enrich the analysis. Overall, this study represents a sound and pertinent application of semiotic theory to a significant work of contemporary Indonesian literature. It holds promise as a valuable contribution, offering a robust framework for discerning the intricate layers of meaning embedded within *Laut Bercerita*.
