Abstract

Review

This study presents a timely and relevant analysis of critical land in the Kuncir Dam Watershed, Nganjuk Regency, utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Addressing the significant impacts of land degradation, deforestation, and land-use change on climate change and local disaster susceptibility, the research effectively aims to map critical land areas to support conservation and disaster mitigation efforts. The application of a quantitative descriptive method combined with spatial data analysis, guided by established national regulations (Peraturan Dirjen PDASHL Nomor P.3/PDASHL/SET/KUM.1/7/2018), provides a structured and policy-relevant approach to the problem. The study's focus on a region frequently affected by seasonal floods underscores its practical importance and potential for immediate local impact. The methodology employed in mapping land cover, slope, erosion hazard, and land criticality is robust, incorporating verification through satellite imagery and field observations, which enhances the reliability of the findings. Key results indicate that the study area is predominantly covered by planted forests and dry agricultural land, with gentle slopes (less than 15%) and mostly light to moderate erosion hazards. Despite these seemingly benign conditions, a significant portion of the land, totaling 917.55 hectares (12% of the total area), is identified as critical, primarily attributed to low canopy cover in specific areas. The clear identification of critical land extent and its primary cause provides a strong foundation for the proposed conservation recommendations, which include vegetative methods, increased retention ponds (embung), and the planting of perennial crops to mitigate flood risks. While the abstract clearly outlines the methodology and results, the full paper would benefit from a more detailed exposition of how the specific criteria within Peraturan Dirjen PDASHL Nomor P.3/PDASHL/SET/KUM.1/7/2018 were applied and weighted to determine land criticality. Further, a deeper discussion on the socio-economic implications and feasibility of implementing the proposed conservation strategies within the local community context would add considerable value. Given the abstract's initial emphasis on the broader impacts of land degradation on greenhouse gas emissions, albedo, and the carbon cycle, the paper could also explore how these local findings and proposed interventions might contribute to or be scaled up for broader climate change mitigation efforts. Overall, this research provides valuable spatially-explicit data and practical recommendations, making a significant contribution to informed decision-making for watershed conservation in Kabupaten Nganjuk.
