Abstract

Head lice are small parasites found on the scalp and have the ability to suck blood from the head. Parasites, which in medical language are also called pediculosis capitis, This study aims to determine the factors related to personal hygiene and the incidence of pediculosis capitis in elementary school students in Lasusua District, North Kolaka Regency. This study uses a cross-sectional analytical method with a sample size of 60 students. Data analysis using the Che Square test shows that the results of the study show that there is a relationship between student knowledge (p value = 0.001), use of shared combs (p value = 0.000), frequency of washing hair (p value = 0.003), and gender (p value = 0.000) and the incidence of Pediculosis Capitis (head lice). Of the four variables studied, the use of shared combs was the most related factor to the spread of head lice among students. It is recommended that schools improve education about hygiene and the dangers of sharing personal items such as combs and introduce regular hair washing programs.

Review

This study investigates the critical public health issue of pediculosis capitis among elementary school students, focusing on its relationship with personal hygiene factors. The title clearly defines the scope, targeting students in a specific region of Indonesia. The abstract effectively introduces head lice as a common parasitic infestation and articulates the study's objective: to identify factors associated with personal hygiene and the incidence of pediculosis capitis. This research is highly relevant given the widespread nature of head lice infestations in school-aged populations and their potential impact on student well-being and academic performance. Utilizing a cross-sectional analytical method with a sample size of 60 students, the study employs the Chi-Square test to analyze data. The findings reveal statistically significant associations between several variables and the incidence of pediculosis capitis. Specifically, a strong relationship was observed with student knowledge (p=0.001), the use of shared combs (p=0.000), frequency of hair washing (p=0.003), and gender (p=0.000). Notably, the use of shared combs emerged as the most significant factor linked to head lice transmission among the students. These results provide clear empirical evidence supporting the importance of personal hygiene practices and awareness in controlling pediculosis. While the study offers valuable insights into local factors contributing to pediculosis capitis, some limitations are inherent to its design. The cross-sectional nature prevents the establishment of causality, only identifying associations. Furthermore, the relatively small sample size and focus on a single school may limit the generalizability of these findings to broader populations or other regions. Nevertheless, the study's recommendations for schools to enhance hygiene education, discourage sharing personal items, and implement regular hair washing programs are highly practical and actionable. Future research could benefit from larger, longitudinal studies and explore additional potential confounding factors to build a more comprehensive understanding of pediculosis epidemiology.
