This paper, "Análise morfológica de sinais da Libras que nomeiam municípios da Zona da Mata Mineira," investigates a critical and under-explored area within sign language linguistics: the morphological structure of toponyms in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras). Building upon foundational work in Brazilian toponymy by Dick (1990) and the initial application to Libras by Souza-Junior (2012), this study offers a significant advancement by providing a detailed morphological analysis within a specific geographical and cultural context. The focus on how deaf communities name their localities and the internal structural properties of these signs is not only vital for understanding Libras linguistics but also contributes valuable insights to broader sociolinguistic and typological studies of place names. The methodological approach employed is commendably robust and appropriate for the stated objectives. The collection of 122 Libras signs, specifically those naming municipalities in the Zona da Mata Mineira region, from a "Librassário" (toponym archive) developed through the active collaboration of deaf individuals from Minas Gerais, ensures the authenticity and ecological validity of the data. This commitment to community-sourced data is a particular strength of the research. The subsequent morphological analysis, meticulously grounded in recent and relevant theoretical frameworks by Rodero-Takahira (2015), Rodero-Takahira and Scher (2020), and Xavier and Ferreira (2021), promises a nuanced and detailed examination of the signs' internal structures, moving beyond initial typologies to explore finer morphological distinctions. The results present compelling and highly specific insights into the morphological composition of Libras toponyms. The finding of a significant prevalence of hybrid signs (57%), with a striking majority being compound hybrid signs (79%), clearly illustrates the complex interplay of linguistic elements in the formation of place names within the deaf community. Furthermore, the detailed breakdown of compound signs into simultaneous (42%), mixed, sequential, and simultaneous (38%), and sequential (20%) types provides granular empirical evidence that enriches our understanding of morphological processes in Libras. This granular analysis is a key contribution, offering robust data and theoretical applications that can inform future studies on sign language morphology, toponymy, and the unique linguistic creativity within deaf communities. Overall, this research substantially advances the field of Libras linguistics.
