Abstract

Review

The article "AFROCENTRICIDADES" proposes a timely and highly relevant comparative analysis of the character Louis in Anne Rice's *Interview with the Vampire*, contrasting his original portrayal in the 1991 novel with his contemporary adaptation in the 2022 television series (Jones, 2022). The title itself immediately signals a commitment to an Afrocentric perspective, which the abstract confirms by explicitly focusing on the active promotion of Black protagonism and identity within the series. This investigation into how a foundational character from gothic literature is re-imagined through a racial lens speaks directly to current discussions surrounding representation, adaptation, and cultural relevance in popular media. The methodology employed for this study appears robust and well-suited to its comparative aims. The authors propose a qualitative research approach, drawing on the principles of Gil (2002), to meticulously compare specific excerpts from the novel with scenes from the television series. This close reading is grounded in a strong theoretical framework, utilizing Carvalhal (2006) and Coutinho (1994) for adaptation studies, and Cardoso (2013) for intersemiotic analysis bridging cinema and literature. Crucially, the theoretical scaffolding extends to critical race theory with the inclusion of Nascimento (2009) and Dutra (2017) to specifically address and analyze the intentional shift in Louis's ethnicity and its socio-cultural implications, demonstrating a comprehensive and thoughtful approach to the subject matter. The anticipated findings suggest a significant contribution to the fields of adaptation studies, media studies, and critical race theory. The abstract indicates that the character's reconstruction is deemed "fundamental in contemporaneity," especially through visual and literary media, underscoring their power in fostering identification and constructing Black identity and protagonism. By examining the nuances of Louis's repaginated persona as a Black supernatural narrator, the research effectively highlights how media can serve as a crucial platform for challenging historical narratives and promoting diverse representations. This paper thus promises to offer valuable insights into the dynamic interplay between source material, adaptation, and the imperative for culturally resonant and inclusive storytelling in the 21st century.
