Abstract

Early Marriage is still a trending problem in Indonesia. Marriage is carried out under the age of 19, which is not in accordance with the provisions of the Marriage Law Number 16 of 2019 concerning marriage. The emergence of impacts and dangers due to early marriage and also the increasing cases prompted researchers to conduct this study. This study aims to find out in depth about children's knowledge, family roles, pre-prosperous economy and culture that encourage early marriage. This research method uses qualitative research with a Case Study Research approach, with a total of 9 (nine) informants. The selection of informants was determined by the purposive sampling technique. Data collection was obtained through interviews, observations and observations. Data analysis was conducted qualitatively. The results of the study showed that low informant knowledge, the role of parents, and a pre-prosperous economy encouraged early marriage. Culture does not play a role in the occurrence of early marriage. The habit of molibai (women living in a man's house before a proposal or legal marriage) is not part of a cultural tradition, but a past habit that does not apply in today's era. The conclusion of this study is that good children's knowledge is very important, especially in making good decisions regarding marriage for a good future. The role of parents is needed to think well before marrying off children. Empowerment and improvement of the family economy are very basic things to pay attention to, access to information through education, cross-sector socialization for children and families to prevent early marriage.

Review

This case study addresses the persistent and critical issue of early marriage in Indonesia, a problem highlighted by its non-compliance with Marriage Law Number 16 of 2019 and its associated adverse impacts. Focusing on the Matanga Health Center working area, the research set out to deeply explore the contributing factors of early marriage, specifically investigating children's knowledge, family roles, socio-economic conditions, and cultural influences. Employing a qualitative research design with a case study approach, the study effectively utilized purposive sampling to gather data from nine informants through interviews and observations, promising a rich, contextual understanding of the phenomenon. The findings illuminate several key drivers of early marriage in the studied region. The research identified low knowledge among children, the significant role of parents, and pre-prosperous economic conditions as primary encouraging factors. Notably, the study offers a nuanced perspective on culture, concluding that it does not play a direct role in encouraging early marriage. This finding is further elaborated by distinguishing the historical "molibai" habit (women living in a man's house before legal marriage) from a current cultural tradition, classifying it instead as a past practice no longer applicable. This distinction is crucial for understanding the specific socio-cultural dynamics at play. The study provides valuable insights that lead to practical and actionable recommendations for preventing early marriage. It underscores the paramount importance of enhancing children's knowledge to empower them in making informed decisions about their future, particularly regarding marriage. Furthermore, it emphasizes the need for parents to critically evaluate decisions concerning their children's marriage and highlights economic empowerment as a fundamental intervention. The conclusion advocates for comprehensive strategies, including increased access to information through education and cross-sectoral socialization initiatives targeting both children and families, positioning this research as a significant contribution to localized prevention efforts against early marriage.
