Abstract

Indonesia has a diverse culture, history, and knowledge from the past written in ancient manuscripts. This research aims to identify the potential and challenges of ancient manuscripts in Indonesia, and formulate activities to overcome the challenges of ancient manuscripts as digital cultural heritage. The method used is Narrative Literature Review to explore and develop existing understanding and contribute to shaping new perspectives. The data used was obtained from the Google Scholar database using research boundaries with a distance of the last 10 (ten) years, namely from 2014 - 2023 with a total of 8 journal articles. The data was analyzed by reducing and displaying data and making conclusions through a brief narrative. The results showed that ancient manuscripts in Indonesia have great potential as a source of information, history and knowledge, and can support the creative industry and tourism. However, there are challenges in the form of lack of public understanding, vulnerable physical condition of manuscripts, lack of public trust in the government, and threats from biological, physical, chemical, human, and natural disaster factors. In overcoming these challenges, comprehensive efforts are needed such as socialization, additional budget, cooperation with various parties, increasing the capacity of human resources, and utilizing the latest technology in preserving ancient manuscripts. In conclusion, the preservation of ancient manuscripts in Indonesia faces various complex challenges, but has great potential to be developed as a digital cultural heritage. Therefore, comprehensive efforts from various stakeholders are needed to overcome these challenges so that ancient manuscripts can be preserved and optimally utilized.

By synthesizing existing understanding, the study provides a valuable overview for stakeholders, highlighting the dual nature of opportunities (as sources of information, history, knowledge, and drivers for creative industries and tourism) and threats (physical vulnerability, public understanding and trust issues, and various environmental and human factors). The structured approach of identifying problems and offering solutions makes the research immediately relevant to policy and practice. The review's strength lies in its comprehensive identification of both the great potential and the multifaceted challenges facing ancient manuscripts in Indonesia. It successfully maps out a landscape where cultural richness meets preservation dilemmas. The proposed solutions—encompassing socialization, increased budget, inter-agency cooperation, human resource capacity building, and leveraging technology—offer a practical framework for addressing these challenges. While the narrative literature review method is suitable for exploring and shaping perspectives, the abstract indicates it has successfully distilled a clear set of findings regarding the specific types of potential and the various categories of threats, culminating in a set of actionable recommendations. However, a notable limitation identified within the abstract is the relatively narrow scope of the literature search. Relying solely on the Google Scholar database and a modest collection of eight journal articles from a ten-year period (2014-2023) might not fully capture the breadth and depth of research and initiatives in this rapidly evolving field. For a comprehensive understanding and the formulation of robust strategies, a broader, more systematic literature search incorporating additional databases, grey literature, and potentially international case studies could strengthen the evidence base. Future research building on this foundation could conduct a more systematic review, possibly incorporating qualitative data from practitioners, to further elaborate on the practical implementation details and effectiveness of the proposed solutions. Despite this, the paper serves as a valuable preliminary synthesis, underscoring the urgency and complexity of preserving Indonesia's digital cultural heritage.
