Abstract

Minkälainen on suomalainen perunaruttopopulaatio? Onko perunalajikkeiden taudinkestävyydessä eroja? Soveltuvatko eurooppalaiset tautiennustemallit Suomeen? Voidaanko biologisilla aineilla torjua tehokkaasti perunan tauteja? Entä yhdistämällä niitä kemiallisten kasvinsuojeluaineiden kanssa samoihin torjuntaohjelmiin? Näihin kysymyksiin haettiin vastauksia SUSPO- ja ECOSOL-tutkimushankkeissa.

Review

This paper, titled "Research News on Potato Blight and Early Blight from Petla," presents a highly relevant and timely overview of ongoing research concerning two critical potato diseases in Finland. The abstract clearly outlines a comprehensive set of questions that are fundamental to understanding and managing potato late blight (*Perunarutto*) and early blight (*lehtipolte*) within a specific regional context. The focus on Finnish conditions, particularly regarding disease population characteristics and the applicability of existing models, signals a valuable contribution to regional agricultural science. The research agenda, as distilled in the abstract, is commendably broad and addresses several key challenges in plant pathology and crop protection. Investigating the Finnish *Phytophthora infestans* population provides crucial epidemiological data, while assessing varietal resistance offers immediate practical insights for growers. Furthermore, the exploration of European disease forecasting model applicability to Finland is vital for optimizing fungicide applications and promoting sustainable practices. Perhaps most critically, the inclusion of studies on biological control agents, both alone and in integrated pest management programs with conventional chemicals, indicates a forward-thinking approach toward more environmentally sound disease management strategies, likely reflecting the objectives of the SUSPO and ECOSOL projects. Based on the abstract, this paper promises to deliver valuable insights for the Finnish potato industry and plant pathologists alike. The diverse range of questions, spanning from fundamental population dynamics to practical application of biologicals and forecasting tools, suggests a robust research effort with direct implications for improving potato yields and reducing reliance on chemical inputs. While the abstract is brief, it effectively conveys the scope and significance of the work, and readers will undoubtedly anticipate the detailed findings and methodologies that underpin these important investigations.
