Abstract

Review

This paper addresses the critical issue of empowering the Bajo community in Mantigola Makmur village, Kaledupa, Wakatobi, a population uniquely intertwined with the marine environment. The abstract effectively highlights the deep connection of the Bajo people to the sea, which, while central to their identity, also contributes to significant challenges in accessing basic facilities like education, health, and public infrastructure, alongside environmental concerns. The involvement of the KKN-PPM UGM Unit S3-003 underscores a commendable effort by students to engage directly with an underserved community, aiming to identify problems and foster collaborative solutions. The choice of focus is highly relevant, given the increasing attention on indigenous and marginalized maritime communities and their sustainable development. The methodology described, encompassing literature review, observation, unstructured interviews, and direct examination, provides a foundational approach for understanding community needs. The identification of various problems faced by Desa Mantigola Makmur serves as a valuable baseline for intervention. The proposed solutions, primarily through education, socialization, and counseling enriched with "best practicing" stories, reflect a community-based participatory approach. While these methods are appropriate for a community service project, the abstract suggests a report on *activities undertaken* rather than a deep analytical research paper. The term "empowerment" in the title suggests a transformation, but the abstract focuses more on initial problem identification and solution implementation rather than the outcomes or mechanisms of this empowerment. For a journal publication, the paper could significantly benefit from a more explicit articulation of its theoretical framework regarding "empowerment" and how the interventions specifically contribute to it. While valuable as a project report, the abstract would be strengthened by detailing how the data was systematically analyzed, what specific insights were generated beyond a list of problems, and the preliminary impact or lessons learned from the "best practicing" stories and interventions. Future iterations of this work, or the full paper itself, should elaborate on the specific metrics or qualitative indicators used to assess the effectiveness of the education and socialization efforts, and how long-term sustainability and genuine community empowerment are envisioned or measured. This would elevate the work from a project summary to a more rigorous academic contribution.
