Abstract

Medium-scale shrimp farming generates wastewater containing high levels of organic matter and suspended solids (BOD and TSS), which can pollute the environment if not properly managed. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a biofilter using a combination of granular zeolite and activated carbon in reducing BOD and TSS in shrimp pond wastewater in Situbondo. The study employed a field experimental approach with inlet and outlet sampling conducted monthly over six months (January–June 2025). Descriptive analysis and paired-sample t-tests were used to assess significant differences before and after biofilter treatment. Results indicated average reductions of 52.2% for BOD and 60.7% for TSS, with statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). The higher TSS reduction was attributed to sedimentation and physical filtration, whereas BOD reduction was influenced by the combined chemical adsorption and biologically mediated degradation supported by aeration. Monthly effectiveness remained consistent without extreme fluctuations, indicating stable performance over the medium term. These findings demonstrate that a biofilter combining zeolite and activated carbon significantly reduces pollutants, improves water quality, and supports environmentally friendly shrimp farming practices compliant with wastewater standards. Regular maintenance, water quality monitoring, and timely media replacement are recommended to sustain treatment efficiency.
