Abstract

The integration of autonomous vehicles (AVs) into smart cities presents a significant transformation in urban transportation systems, promising increased efficiency, safety, and sustainability. However, the control of autonomous vehicles in dynamic urban environments raises several challenges, such as sensor accuracy, traffic coordination, security, and regulatory issues. This paper explores the key challenges in the control of AVs within smart cities, including real-time decision-making, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, and interaction with existing infrastructure. Additionally, we examine innovative solutions such as AI-based control algorithms, 5G communication networks, and cloud-based traffic management systems that aim to overcome these challenges. The article further discusses the future implications of AVs in smart cities, including the potential for mobility as a service (MaaS) and the societal impact of fully autonomous transportation systems.
