Ao leitor moderno — e certamente também ao espectador ateniense do V século a.C. — acostumado ao estilo de Sófocles e Esquilo, ocorre com freqüência experimentar uma sensação peculiar diante das peças de Eurípides, sensação difícil de definir, mas que poderia ser expressa, mais ou menos, como a constatação de um certo grau de hibridismo. Uma obra de arte, enquadrada em determinado gênero, cria naturalmente no público acostumado uma expectativa, decorrente do conjunto de experiências anteriores com outros autores e obras similares, que lhe permite identificar, implicitamente, os elementos distintivos daquele tipo de produção. Estabelecem-se assim linguagens características de cada gênero, que com o tempo passam a ser consideradas como próprias e mesmo, principalmente através do trabalho da crítica, como as únicas apropriadas a cada caso. Na prática, constituem verdadeiros limites dentro dos quais o autor deverá se movimentar e que, mesmo sem a ação coercitiva da crítica, são interiorizadas por ele e pelo público. Com efeito, a existência de diversos tipos de linguagem é a responsável pela abertura inicial dos canais de comunicação entre o autor e seu público, na medida em que o primeiro procura atender à expectativa do segundo através da obra.
